10 Shocking Facts You Didn’t Know About South Africa’s DJ Black Coffee


DJ Black Coffee is South African multi award winning artiste, record producer and DJ. He began his career around 1995 and has released five albums and a live DVD under his Johannesberg-based record label, SOULISTIC MUSIC. He is arguably the most prominent electronic music producer in Africa. Black Coffee had his big break shortly after being chosen as a participant in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy held in Cape Town.

Here are the facts  you didn’t know about Black Coffee:

1. Black Coffee’s real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo.

2. He was born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and grew up in Umthatha, Eastern Cape.

3. Black Coffee married Actress and TV Presenter Mbali Mlotshwa on Sunday the 13th of May 2011.

4. He majored in Jazz Studies at Technikon Natal now Durban University of Technology (DUT).

5. Black Coffee was chosen as one of two South African as participants in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003.



6. He launched his career in 2005 with a remix of Hugh Masekela’s 1972 hit Stimela.

7. Black Coffee founded the Soulistic Music (South African Record company) in 2005.

8. He won five awards in 2010 namely; SAMA Best Urban Dance Album, SAMA Best Male Artist, Mens’ Health Magazine Best Man, Metro FM Award for Best Produced Album and Metro FM Award for Best Dance Album

9. Black Coffee’s Africa Rising DVD and CD (triple CD) sold double platinum in a space of a month in 2012.

10. He was named “Breakthrough Dj Of The Year” at Dj Awards in Pacha, Ibiza, Spain on Tuesday the 29th of September 2015.
